Looking for flat water and not too gusty. Maybe Skaket is better on SW - pure sideshore(?)

Thanks for any input.

Funny. I look at a map of Cape Cod and would never even think that either of those two beaches would be good in a SW or S wind. Is it just that the meter reads higher that brings this question up?
Sorry I guess I just don't get it.
Or do I? Rolling Eyes

That's the Aloha Spirit!

(West dennis can stay pretty darn flat, just depends on tide and wind speed )
Occasionally Welfleet Harbor could be ok.
Maybe Ron C can fill in about the Skaket First Encounter....I've never sailed there

West Dennis is beautifully flat around low tide, but low just doesn't always coincide with the wind, so i'm looking for alternatives. Low tide is 6:20 pm this Sunday.

My reasoning: Hatch Beach seems to have a lot of strong wind, though maybe meter reads high. My thinking was that S is sideshore and SW side-on there, but there isn't a long fetch to build up swell. Wind could still be messy coming over land there however. Campground beach might be another option because it's further north, and I think it would have clean air on a S or SW.

Others have posted that Skaket works on S and SW, and looking at the map, SW would be pure sideshore there.

the meter is way up high and reads really high compared to whats on the water at skaket in my experience. ronc. has skaket in his backyard always goes to kalmus on SW, so take that into account.

Hello:

Skaket works really well in a SW. If I know the wind is gonna be up in the summer, I'll park my car early and bike home. Parking in the summer is a b!tch.

My reason for heading to Kalmus is part tide and part people. Going to Kalmus is like hanging at the neighborhood bar.

8:30 and I've got to hit the hay to keep up with Jerry!

I sailed Skaket in SW winds once when Kalmus decoupled, and several times in WSW. It was quite nice, but I would not call it flat. However, the chop was pretty orderly, nothing like high tide voodoo chop in Kalmus. The wind was around 25 gusting to 35 on the SW day. No problems sailing a freerace or slalom board for mile-long runs into the bay,

West Dennis has about a 3 ft tide, Skaket 9-10 ft, so it's even more tide dependent. Unless you don't mind a 1/2 mile walk, it's fine from about 3 hours before to 3 hours after high tide. First Encounter is a bit shallower, and the shallows go out further, so the window is even shorter.

Both places can be quite flat between the waves if the wind is pretty straight on-shore (similar to Kalmus in S-SSW and low tide). That's for a short time when the tide is just right, though. When the water gets deeper, chop goes up, similar to WD. When it's shallow and flat, using a short fin, like a freestyle fin or MUF Delta, is a good idea.

Looks like you guys had some decent SW in Kalmus and WD today, with a lot more in the forecast. Figures that this would happen the one time during the year where Nina and I are away on a business trip!

Thanks for all the input. Yeah, the reality of hitting that short window of perfect opportunity may make a great theoretical plan useless.
