Yeah Garritt , that looks like about 3 feet Hawaiian, but maybe closer to 20 feet Californian OK 15 feet Californian.
Why guess , get one of those fancy gadgets and bring it to Waddell.

Why can't women estimate measurement accurately? Because all their lives, they've been told this (hold thumb and index finger approximately 1" apart) is six inches
I knew I was opening myself up by posting that photo. Hawaiians can't measure either. 4' Hawaiian is 12' Californian. So Eric is right, call it 15' Californian because that's where the photo was taken.
If we get the device and stand at the north end of the Waddell parking lot, we've already "jumped" 20' above sea level.

That pic, if he's at his peak, is 6' Californian, 6' Hawaiin, by surfers and windsurfers who are experts.
Novices can claim what they want.
I've surfed 10' Hawaiin Pipeline, the same as 10 Californian OceanBeach SanFrancisco.

OK, so I'm wrong. Looked again closer.
It's 4' either measurement. Always taken from bottom of board/fin to top of the nearest hunk of water he took off from.

Come on LeeD, get real. Hawaiian understatement of wave sizing is of world renown. It's a least one half the size of a Californian's view. And, all this nonsense about measuring waves from the back is goofy in my view. We ride the front of the wave, and there is no question about that, because that's where the action is. How many videos have you seen where all the shots of the waves are from the back?

I'd like to think I know a little about California and Hawaiin wave measurements.
Been to Oahu for surfing for over a cumalative year, 10 trips in the winter, 3 in the summer.
Surfed OBSF from '66 thru '85.
Hawaiian measurement is exactly the same as California for surfer's who are expert levels or better. EXACTLY!.
For those armchair "experts" from either area, it can be anything.
I've sat next to Rory, Gerry, and TomStone at Pipe.
I've surfed next to Grigg, Kanaipuni, HoBros, Hakman, at Sunset.
They guesstimate the wave size exactly as I do.
And almost every single OBSF surfer guesses the wave size the same.
No expert surfer or windsurfer takes into account the back of the wave sizing.
Lots of novices and beginner surfers think of the back of waves.
Teopoo back sizing is around 8' when the front is a solid maxed out 15.
Deadman's back is 1/4 the front sizing.

I've surfed OB along side this guy named Mike or Bob something, and we agreed on the wave size too!

Oh, Wiamea 25' is pretty common, and something most surfer's agree on.
Mavericks 25' is also pretty common, and everyone agrees with that sizing, even the Hawaiins. Much more fear there.
That spot in SFrance, or NSpain, might be taller, but no fear factor.
Fear factor is huge at GhostTrees.
Jaws is average for the size.
Go to Wise's and ask for the photo of LarryMcGraw dropping into a 6X overhead wave at OBSF. Larry is 6'3".
