Soooo......who's up for a bit-o-winter sailin'? Any of you sf bay home-boyz up for it?
Where's you favorite spot to shred upon these short winter dayz.....do tell!
As a bay area home-boy myself, I've got to admit that I have yet to par-take in this activity.
Been reading some posts on half moon bay area, and it sounds great.
What forecast info are y'all checking out to get the good forecast?
Love to try half moon bay.......it is a bit of a drive though-especially on these short days, but I've just got to do it!
Oh, and what about wave sailing? Where's your favorite spot (in the sf area)?
Let's hear it!

Many Dawgs winter sail the Palo Alto storm fronts and then the clearing winds. It's much closer than HMB for us in the South Bay.
Keep an eye on the PA sensor as the storm approaches. Make sure tides are good for the return trip across the mud flats (4 feet on iWindsurf tide chart) but you can launch at 2 feet with a short fin and sail to deeper water. A flood is preferable but an ebb works as long as you have the 4 feet for the return.
Storm winds typical are E to SE and will clock to S as the front approaches. This will happen over several hours depending on the speed of the storm. When it starts raining it's time to head in. When it starts clocking to S it's time to head in.
That's all folks!
BTW, I missed the last PA storm........I'm stuck in La Ventana for another week. |

Lot of people sail in winter, where have you been? must be watching football, or hockey (well,, couldn't be hockey).
The popular bay spots that work in SE storm winds are:
Larkspur
Alameda Crown beach
Berkeley
Oyster Point
PA and HMB (as mentioned)
Never wave sailed the coast on a storm but there was a receint
thread that mentioned Cowels in Santa Cruz. Sounds like expert only.
I hear the normal wave spots are too wild during storm winds anyway. |

Been sailing winters for 20 of my 30 years of windsurfing
As mentioned for S winds, add Limantour, Bodega, Tomales, Stinson, and I'm sure many more, including Crissy on the offshore S winds.
Then you get counter winds, the N-NE, that blows mainly in Rio, not great at Sherman, but good at older river sites Glass, Sandy, WindyCove. Better at end of the road behind the islands, but that often is closed in the winter.
NE at Berkeley, PtIsabelle, Crissy, much weaker at Rod&G, usually N of the BayBridge. We gave up on inconsistency of Blackies, Tiburon, and Strawberry, either side of the connector bridge. No mention of Alameda because it's side offshore gusty/holey, dieing around 1PM.
NE winds are best from 10 thru 1PM, and usually slowly wind down from there. |

All summer, when the winds blow, Larkspur works on S winds.
On winter storms, it's S to SE winds.
There are few more polluted launch sites than just downcreek from the CorteMadera Creek. You take your chances there on rainy days. |

During the last set of storms I think most of the run-off polution has entered the bay and disipated by now. There shouldn't be much left for the rest of the winter at most sites. You'll still get some polution but not much to worry about. Sail the fronts before it rains if you have reservations. |

Victor, I assume you meant my post on Rio?
Yes, Delta. Some rainy winters, when the rains pour long and hard, they close the road just past the kiosk due to flood possibilities. That takes away the flat water at the jet ski launch on N-NE winds. |
