I bought an ex cab Chrysler minivan here in Maui with 254000 on it and drove it for 6 years with my gear in it.
It cost $1500 and sold for 950 with 296000 miles
. Saw the new owner he says it still runs strong.
I bought another ex cab Chrysler mini van with 90000 miles.
My gear wouldn't fit in my Lotus Elise, although Naish hauls gear in his Porsche 911 Targa with a ski rack
I once drove to Kanaha with the gear seat belted in my Miata. Short drive.

Chevy Avalanche is the ultimate vehicle. I put my rack on the back over the bed cover, with Yakima rails and racks. The back window opens for longer boards, or if you don't want people to see your gear it all fits below in the back with the back seat folded down.
You should at least stop by a Chevy dealer to see how versatile the vehicle is. It even has 2 ice chests, (or tool boxes) that drain to the street as the ice melts. You can sleep in it, completely covered up, or take the back covers off to haul a piano.
For the mega rich, Cadillac makes a high end version too. This photo doesn't have the back racks as they are my custom design, however this is one slick truck.

Good old Jimmy. Hauling surfboards since 1971... sailboards were added in 1981. I can leave all my crap in the back and sleep there when needed. The Grim Reachers can sit on the tailgate for after sailing beer, peanuts and...um....you know. Also, the green color stands out when you're all the way out at Brooks island. And it burns rubber anytime I want.

And add to that no bi-yearly smog check requirements.

What's a session gonna cost in that Avalanche when gas hits $15/gallon, as some proven predictors anticipate? I'm already at $80 for a simple overnight trip to my usual launch.

I get 16 mpg. What's that beautiful old green beast get? 16 is not so bad.
Iso, chill, the world's not coming to an end because Obama got elected. Always good to own some USO and Gold with your guns....just in case though.

It has nothing to do with Obama. It began with Reagan and was all but set in stone when the debt hit 13 figures before he left office, if we're to believe the guys who predicted '08 well in advance. I'm not betting the farm on them, but I am betting some acreage, so to speak, on it.

I have a VW Diesel that holds wife and dog , 2 boards {incl Formula} 4 sails ,2 booms , 3 masts , ice chest and camping gear while getting 42 mpg...of course the deck lid is open /unlocked ...but nothing on the roof
The daily driver is an Odysssey Van that {on road trips} holds up to 6 boards {incl 2 Formula}, 10 sails , 8 masts , 4 booms ,ice chests , table , chairs , tents , fishing gear, seating for three people.... everything inside with back door closed/locked and gets 22 to 25 mpg
I'm talking everyday vehicle you drive to work, and then go windsurfing
(assuming that you do work). Something that you can avoid getting that all to familiar WS'ing stench to travel along with you wherever you go.
Something somewhat practical too.
Let's hear your solutions and ideas.
And, Happy Thanksgiving y'all.

Kellygeygan: You own the VW stationwagon with the Turbo Diesel?
VW is apparently going to bring that engine to the US in some other platforms..Wouldn't it be nice in a VW van...?

Toyota Matrix 2006 has a front seat as well as a backseat that fold flat so I can fit both a 9'6" and 8'11" board plus four sails two booms and me inside and get 30 mpg highway. It holds five going to dinner around town.; four on a road trip is comfortable.
