Is it relatively safe to drive alone these days from the US border down to Ensenada during the day? My main concern would be missing the turn off to the toll road. Are the roads clearly marked going down? I know coming back is always a little screwed up.

Hi Allen,

Last week the old San Yisidro/Tijuana at the end of I5 was closed. In the Baja Guide I have a detailed description, photos and a map of the new high tech. El Chapparal border crossing that is 1/4 of a mile to the west.

There is also a description of how to get your FMM and pay the bank fee at the new crossing. Last week Gorge sailor Doug. M. called me from the new crossing and said it is MUCH easier than the old one.

From what he said it is now simple to find your way to the Toll road with taking the scenic route the back neighborhoods of Tijuana.

Having done the drive over 40 times I think the only difficult part left is finding your way through Ensenada. Just follow the signs!

Here is the Baja Guide:

Yep, even flying in you have to fill out a FMM before deplaning. Actually there are those driving down that do not bother and just enter the country illegally. But if something goes bad, like an accident, you are screwed. The only place you do not need an FMM is between Tijuana and Ensenada.

Is there space to park a van and 28' travel trailer when getting a FMT? The old crossing had bus parking that I used to park.
