Windsurfers like wind. The rest of it we pretty much just deal with-pollution, dog stuff, toxic mold, human, industrial and agricultural runoff etc. |

Have it both ways!
Last week I skied powder then sailed 4.2 wind.
This week if the clearing winds come through for Wednesday, I'll go for the reverse- sail then ski.
I'm not the only one leading a double life right now.

just the usual amount of dog shit at the launch is probably enough to raise the pollution to disgusting levels, not to mention the effluent from the surrounding industrial area.
but, what do we care, we sail next to old dump sites whenever we can. |

jse, coulda been the larkspur spill, however the straits follows the old riverbed so it drains everything dumping into the north bay. perhaps it was worse because corte madera creek is around the corner from here so there's less time for dilution. at any rate it makes me appreciate places like mendo and pt. reyes for water quality, making me aspire to get better so I can sail those spots.
on the skiing vs sailing/surfing thing, first off skiing is way more expensive for me than sailing. this is mainly because I refuse to day trip from marin so lodging and dining add up, not to mention the hassle of traveling with small kids. Even with touring for turns in the backcountry and saving a $90 ticket, the price of a tahoe weekend anymore is pricey, but mainly it's the commute that keeps me local save for a few trips every year.
On a side note, there's really good backcountry skiing/boarding 45 minutes from Ukiah on Hull mountain via boardman ridge rd. access. This 6800' bump gets buried and is 2:45 from my house. The snow here is rarely powder, but it's almost always easily spreadable winter cream corn, I attribute this to the fact it's a mere 45 to 50 miles from the ocean in a region that gets pounded by storms and has semi constant cloud cover. as such avalanche danger is rarely a concern here. I can reach donner summit and its' 8,000ft + peaks and ridgelines in about 3 hours, but when there's weather forecast or it's going to be a shit-show weekend at tahoe I'll go to Hull w/o question. |
