Planing in 8kt for heavier sailors is expert territory - you shouldn't expect it. 14 is very realistic on an 8.5 Lion though.

You mention the Starboard Futura and that would be an excellent choice ...

Fastest is Turpentine. Mineral spirits will work but Turps just dissolves the stuff instantly and is safe for the monofilm.
