widespread light to occasionally moderate rain across all of western
new york. this rain will pick up in intensity during the overnight
hours as a slug of heavy rain will lift out of the ohio valley.
additional rainfall amounts from 8 pm this evening through 8 am
sunday morning is forecast to range from around one inch across the
southern tier to as much as 2 inches across the niagara frontier.
while a large percentage of the snowpack has been melted away or
washed into tributaries that are near or above bankful...the
expected moderate to heavy rain during the overnight will greatly
exacerbate the flooding concerns. local law enforcement already
reports a number of flooded roads and road closures... especially
across the southern tier and points south and east of buffalo where
the largest snowmelt has occurred.
a flood warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause greatly elevated
levels on small creeks and streams...and ponding of water in urban
areas...highways...streets and underpasses...poor drainage areas and
farmland along the banks of creeks and streams.
be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding. if flooding is observed act quickly. move up to
higher ground to escape flood waters. do not stay in areas subject to
flooding when water begins rising.
