rip current risk today:
weather and ocean conditions will produce a moderate threat for
strong rip currents and rough surf. local beach patrols reported
several dozen ocean rescues over the weekend...including one surf
related fatality. check with the local beach patrol for additional
information on beach hazards.

rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore...which occur most often at low spots or breaches in
the sandbar...and near piers and jetties. heed the advice of
lifeguards and the beach patrol. pay attention to flags and posted
signs.

if you become caught in a rip current...do not panic. remain calm
and begin to swim parallel to shore. once you are away from the
seaward pull of the rip current...begin to swim back to the beach.
do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current. even a
strong swimmer can become exhausted quickly.

north winds behind a recent front will produce an additional
hazard of rough surf and a swiftly moving longshore current within
the surf zone.

outlook for tuesday...partly sunny. highs in the lower 80s.
northwest winds around 5 mph becoming east 5 to 10 mph in the
afternoon.
