Rooster Rock State Park hosts an exciting high wind sailing venue located just east of downtown Portland. Best known for it's truly nuclear east winds during late fall, winter and early spring months with many days in the 40+ mph range. This well-maintained state park charges a $3.00 per day user fee. Parking is never an issue with several sizeable parking lots available. A long, wide, sandy bottomed launch site makes for easy water access along w/ pleasant grass rigging areas. Beware strong currents which may exist during high-wind easterly periods. Local Expert? edit Edit this Page!

 Season: Best: Oct-March
 Water: strong current, sm-med swells
Ability Level: solid intermediate to expert
Familiness: nice beach area, grass rigging
 Parking: endless parking
 Launch: sandy

From Portland, drive east on I-84 and take exit # 25 and park in either lot adjacent to the Ranger's Station. From Hood River, drive west on I-84 about 38 miles and take exit # 25 into the park. It will cost you $3 to park for the day, yearly passes are also available and good at a number of Oregon State Parks.

Updated Summer 2004 - A major fire in Fall 2000 completely destroyed the site host building and our sensor equipment. After years of unsuccessful negotiations w/ Oregon State Parks to restore our sensor to its original condition, we've finally been able to add data from a new installation nearby. This sensor is positioned near the Corbett exit on I-84, just a few miles east of Rooster Rock. We aren't yet aware of how well this sensor will reflect actual winds at the park but it should perform as well or better than the old position which was sheltered slightly by trees.
