the national weather service in wichita has issued a

* flood warning for...
  labette county in southeast kansas...

* until 600 pm cdt tuesday

* at 853 am cdt...local law enforcement officials reported flooding  
across the warned area...with some rural low water crossings still 
underwater due to excessive runoff from last nights heavy rainfall.

this warning replaces the previous flood warning in affect for the 
same locations. 

precautionary/preparedness actions...

do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. the water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely.

a flood warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. if you
are in the warning area move to higher ground immediately. residents
living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to
protect life and property. do not attempt to cross swiftly flowing
waters or waters of unknown depth by foot or by automobile.

to report flooding...have the nearest law enforcement agency relay
your report to the national weather service forecast office in
wichita.

  montgomery county in southeast kansas...

* until 815 pm cdt tuesday

* at 900 am cdt...local law enforcement officials reported some      
  minor flooding still occurring in rural areas across the           
  warned area...especially for low water crossing locations. 

precautionary/preparedness actions...

excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of urban
areas...highways and underpasses. additionally...rural country roads
and farmlands along the banks of creeks...streams and other low lying
areas are subject to flooding.

do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. the water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely.

* at 747 am cdt...runoff from heavy rainfall which occurred on 
monday night was producing flooding on some creeks and streams in 
fayette county. stream gages on hickory creek at bluff city and 
hurricane creek at mulberry grove were both above flood stage. 

* some locations that will experience flooding include...vandalia...
  brownstown...ramsey...shobonier...st. elmo and wrights corner.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams...country roads...as well as farmland along the
banks of creeks and streams.

  officials reported that a number of roads remained closed due to 
  flooding of creeks and streams. the flooding is in response to
  rainfall on monday night of 3 to over 6 inches.

.this flood warning is a result of three to five inches of rainfall
across southern portions of the basin since last evening...

precautionary/preparedness actions...

heavy rains could cause river levels to rise even higher than 
predicted.  the national weather service will monitor this developing
situation and issue follow up statements as conditions or forecasts 
change.

safety message:  never drive cars, trucks, or sport utility vehicles 
through flooded areas.  the water may be too deep to allow for safe

* from this afternoon to wednesday evening.
* at 7:00 am tuesday the stage was 16.6 feet.
* flood stage is 21.0 feet.
* minor flooding is forecast.
* forecast:  the river is forecast to crest near 22.6 feet this evening.
  additional rises are possible.
* impact:  at 23.0 feet...considerable agricultural land is flooded 
  between troy and moscow mills.
* impact:  at 22.0 feet...right bank overflows.
* impact:  at 21.0 feet...flood stage.  left bank overflows.  minor 
  flooding begins.
* impact:  at 18.0 feet...from highway 61 east to frenchmans bluff...
  low lying agricultural land is inundated.

* at 813 am cdt...the river gauge at riverton on the west 
  nishnabotna river was 21.8 feet. flood stage at this location is 
  21.5 feet. at this level...county road j46...which is also known 
  as river road...is threatened by flood waters. the river should 
  remain just above flood stage today and should begin to fall by 
  late this afternoon.

  riverton.

most flood deaths occur in automobiles. never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the road. when encountering flooded
