the national weather service in gaylord has issued a winter
weather advisory for snow...which is in effect from midnight
tonight to 1 pm est thursday.
* timing: periods of snow will develop across the area between
midnight and 3 am...falling heavily at times through midday
thursday. snow will be most persistent and heavy over the
eastern half of presque isle...alpena...and alcona counties...
particularly along the us-23 corridor from rogers city to
harrisville.
* accumulation: 3 to 8 inches...highest near and a few miles
inland from the lake huron shore. localized higher amounts are
possible.
* impacts: snow covered roads and slippery travel...as well as
periods of poor visibility. in particular...the us-23 corridor
will be most impacted from rogers city down to harrisville.
precautionary/preparedness actions...
a winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause primarily travel difficulties. be prepared for snow
covered roads and limited visibilities...and use caution while
driving.

.cold northerly flow will continue over western lake superior
tonight...setting the stage for moderate to heavy lake effect
snow accumulations for portions of northwest wisconsin through
thursday morning. the greatest snowfall intensity will occur this
evening through midnight. widespread snowfall totals of 3 to 6
inches are expected...but the northern portions of ashland and
iron counties can expect about 6 to 12 inches. travel will be
difficult tonight due to the accumulating snow and low visibility
in the heavier snow bands. the lake effect snow will gradually
diminish late tonight and thursday morning.

will reduce visibilities to a quarter mile or less at times.
* impacts...travel conditions will deteriorate this evening.

a lake effect snow warning means significant amounts of lake-
effect snow are forecast that will make travel very hazardous or
impossible. lake-effect snow showers typically align themselves
in bands and will likely be intense enough to drop 1 to several
inches of snow per hour for several hours. visibilities vary
greatly and can drop to zero within minutes. travel is strongly
discouraged. commerce could be severely impacted. if you must
travel...keep an extra flashlight...food...and water in your
