...a brief preview of wintry weather expected starting tonight...
an intense upper level disturbance will move southeast across the
area tonight. much colder air will surge into the area as the
disturbance passes off to the southeast early friday morning. the
sharply colder temperatures combined with strong north winds will
make friday a preview of the upcoming winter months.
rain showers accompanying the disturbance will change to snow with
the arrival of the colder air. several inches of accumulation is
possible in the lake superior snowbelt of far north central
wisconsin. up to an inch of accumulation is possible across the
rest of north central and far northeast wisconsin...with little
or no accumulation expected over the rest of the area. travel
across far northern wisconsin could become hazardous tonight and
friday.
windy weather is expected friday...with the strongest winds
occurring during the morning. wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph are
expected across most of the area...with 40 to 50 mph gusts near
the lake and bay. winds this strong can make driving high profile
vehicles difficult and can blow around unsecured outdoor objects.
if possible...move items such as lawn furniture and garbage cans
into a garage or sheltered location before the strong winds begin.
most people will also find that a winter coat and hat...and
possibly gloves or mittens...will be needed when venturing
outdoors friday morning.
winds are expected to begin to slowly diminish starting friday
afternoon. but it will still be quite windy and very chilly for trick-
or-treaters late friday afternoon.
winds will continue to diminish friday night. although
temperatures saturday will still be well below normal...a
significant moderation in temperatures will begin sunday.

...freezing temperatures likely this weekend...
a strong cold front is expected to sweep southeast across central
and southeast illinois overnight. blustery north to northwest
winds behind this front on friday will usher in the coldest air of
the season thus far to the region...with highs mostly in the 40s
friday through sunday.
temperatures are expected to drop to between 25 and 30 degrees
during overnight friday night and again overnight saturday night.
so a widespread freeze is expected during those two nights...and
temperatures this cold will bring an end to the growing season.
a freeze warning will likely be required for central and southeast
illinois this weekend. now is a good time to make plans to bring
in or protect any sensitive plants from the freezing temperatures
by friday evening.

...first snow of the season expected along with a potential hard
freeze...
a developing area of low pressure will send a strong cold front south
across eastern kentucky late friday into friday night. this low
pressure system and associated cold front will produce periods of
precipitation from friday into saturday night. temperatures are
expected to drop sharply friday evening into the overnight hours.
these falling temperatures...will allow rain to mix with and change
to snow gradually...starting in the highest elevations along the
virginia border early friday evening. snow levels will lower through
the night with valley locations possibly mixing with and changing to
snow towards dawn saturday. in addition to the cold and snowy
conditions...winds will be brisk behind the cold front with some wind
gusts up to 25 mph friday evening possible.
at this time...most of the snow accumulation will be in areas above
1500 feet...where 1 to 4 inches of snow will be possible. the highest
elevations above 3000 feet could see locally higher amounts. most of
the snow accumulations will reside on grassy and elevated surfaces
due to warm ground temperatures. little if any snow accumulation is
expected across the bluegrass region or in valley locations.
in addition...freezing temperatures are expected friday
night...saturday night...and sunday night. a hard freeze may occur
towards the i-75 corridor saturday night...with a hard freeze and
frost expected areawide sunday night. those with sensitive plants
will need to take action to protect them through the weekend.

...freezing temperatures likely over the weekend...
a strong cold front is expected to move across the quad state
region tonight. behind the front northwest winds will usher in
the coldest air of the season thus far.
temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 20s to around 32
degrees over the region starting after midnight friday night. with
light winds expected to continue through the night, frost
formation will likely be limited to protected areas.
highs are only expected to top out in the upper 40s saturday
afternoon...and then bottom out in the upper 20s by early sunday
morning. temperatures should once again fall at or below the
freezing mark starting around midnight saturday night. with winds
expected to be calm during this period...a widespread frost is
likely.
temperatures this cold will bring an end to the growing season. a
freeze warning will likely be required for all or part of the quad
state region this weekend.
now is a good time to make plans to bring in or protect any
sensitive plants from the cold this weekend.
