...rain today...snow and strong winds monday...
a warm and moist air mass today will produce periods of light to
moderate rain. the highest amounts are expected across northeast
iowa into southwest wisconsin where over three quarters of an inch
are possible. areas along and northwest of a line from waterloo
to la crosse to medford will generally see a half inch or less.
a strong cold front will sweep across the upper mississippi river
valley tonight with rain changing to snow. accumulating snowfall
is likely across the region through tuesday morning. 3 to 5 inches
are possible east of the mississippi river with 1 to 3 inches
elsewhere. the areas of highest snowfall may shift as there is
still some uncertainty with the timing and track of the low
pressure system. snowfall amounts may also need to be adjusted up
or down as certainty increases.
northwest winds will increase significantly on monday with gusts
up to 35 mph possible across wind prone areas of northeast iowa
and southeast minnesota. gusts to 25 mph are possible elsewhere.
these winds may create periods of blowing and drifting snow...
resulting in reduced visibility and difficult road conditions.
persons with travel plans should pay close attention to the latest
forecasts and statements.

...rain tonight followed by a quick transition to snow with moderate
snow accumulations expected monday and monday night...
a quickly developing low pressure system will track across the upper
great lakes tonight through monday night. precipitation will fall as
rain across all of upper michigan this evening...with the heaviest
rainfall over the east half of upper michigan. as the low pressure
system passes near the straits of mackinac early monday morning...cold
air will filter across western upper michigan and transition the rain
to snow. snow is expected at ironwood after midnight tonight...at
iron mountain and marquette by late monday morning...and at newberry
by late monday afternoon. once the snow begins it will be very wet
and fall moderately at times...creating slushy conditions on area
roadways. the afternoon and evening commute on monday will likely be
affected. additionally...strong north to northwest winds of 20 to
30 mph with gusts to 40 mph will be possible into monday evening
resulting in blowing snow and lake enhanced snow near lake superior.
the snow will gradually diminish late monday night into tuesday
morning. at this time...total snow amounts on monday and monday
night of 3 to 5 inches are expected over much of upper michigan with
higher amounts over much of western and north central upper michigan
due to lake enhanced snow.
stay tuned for later forecasts and possible advisories or warnings
for this incoming winter weather system.
