the national weather service in state college pa has issued a

* flood advisory for...
  southwestern blair county in central pennsylvania...
  central cambria county in central pennsylvania...

* until 815 am edt

* at 515 am edt...doppler radar indicated numerous...slow-moving 
  heavy showers drifting east between route 219 and interstate 99.
  brief...torrential rains of over one inch in just a 30 minute 
  period are possible with some of these showers. doppler radar 
  indicated that up to one inch of rain has already fallen in a 
  few locations over the past hour...mainly in the ebensburg area.
  this heavy rain will cause minor flooding across portions of the 
  in the advisory area. 

* some locations that will experience flooding include...
  altoona...hollidaysburg...ebensburg...portage...roaring spring...
  lakemont...cresson...gallitzin...loretto...duncansville...
  beaverdale-lloydell...lilly...carrolltown...sankertown...horseshoe
  curve...east freedom...spring hill...tunnelhill...newry and
  ashville.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

in hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. do not attempt to travel across
flooded roads. find alternate routes. it takes only a few inches of
swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles away.

* at 438 am edt...doppler radar indicated heavy rain falling across 
  the area...with estimates of up to one inch having already fallen. 
  rain...heavy at times...will continue through 6 am...and will lead 
  to urban and small stream flooding in some spots.

* some locations that may experience flooding include... 
  bloomsburg...pottsville...berwick...tamaqua...shenandoah...mahanoy

blackford...jay and grant counties...

recent heavy rainfall was continuing to cause some flooding in the 
area early this morning. at 515 am edt law enforcement reported 
several roads in the area remain closed due to flooding. with the 
exception of areas near the salamonie and mississinewa rivers... 
flood waters should continue to slowly recede this morning.

a flood warning means that flooding is imminent or had been reported.
expect slow rises along streams and rivers. take necessary

* at 9 pm friday the stage was 11.1 feet and rising.
* moderate flooding is forecast.
* flood stage is 12.0 feet.
* forecast...the river will rise above flood stage friday night and 
  crest near 15.9 feet around  8 am saturday august 23 and fall below
  flood stage around  6 pm saturday august 23.
* at 16.0 feet...extensive flooding in back creek in jonesboro. area 
  north of sr 15 near the river is flooded. high water covers most 
  county roads in the flood plain. the levee along the west bank of 
  river fails...flooding homes on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd streets and 
  brings water near business and industrial areas of eastern marion. 
  extensive flooding occurs along boots and massey creeks. 
  evacuations are required.
* this crest compares to a previous crest of 15.8 feet which occurred 
  on jan 13 2005.
