...flood warning in effect to 1000 pm akdt tuesday for the yukon
river at fort yukon...
at 700 pm the river watch team reported the ice jam 12 miles
upstream of fort yukon is continuing to block much of the river
channel causing widespread flooding of lowlands southeast of fort
yukon. this ice jam is likely to break tonight releasing a large
surge of water and ice much like a dam break. the flooding could be
made even worse if a new ice jam forms down river from fort yukon.
fort yukon is currently experiencing flooding of low lying areas on
the west side of town including the ball field and the old tank
farm...and the area around the tribal hall. water levels could rise
rapidly tonight resulting in major flooding of much of town. this
flood could surpass the flood of 2009 .
a flood warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. water
levels can rise rapidly and people along the river are encouraged to
move themselves and property to higher ground away from the river
bank now.
