403 pm edt thu jul 24 2014
the national weather service in newport has issued an
* urban and small stream flood advisory for minor flooding of poor
drainage areas in...
carteret county in eastern north carolina...
this includes the cities of...newport...morehead city...beaufort...
craven county in eastern north carolina...
this includes the city of havelock...
jones county in eastern north carolina...
onslow county in eastern north carolina...
this includes the cities of...pumpkin center...piney green...new
river air station...jacksonville...half moon...camp lejeune main
gate...
* until 645 pm edt
* at 351 pm edt...widespread repeating thunderstorms will produce
additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches through 645 pm over
onslow and carteret counties...and southern portions of jones and
craven counties...and result in flooding of poor drainage areas. 1
to 2 inches has already fallen over the advisory area this
afternoon...and localized total accumulations around 5 inches will
be possible through early this evening. high water on roadways will
be likely in susceptible areas of jacksonville...havelock...morehead
city and beaufort...and on highway 58 on bogue banks.
precautionary/preparedness actions...
excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause elevated levels on
small creeks and streams...and ponding of water in urban
areas...highways...streets and underpasses as well as other poor
drainage areas and low lying spots.
most flood deaths occur in automobiles. never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the road. when encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice...turn around...dont drown.
