...flash flood watch in effect through sunday afternoon...

the national weather service in medford has issued a

* flash flood watch for a portion of northern california...
including the following area...highway 89 at pilgrim creek in
  south central siskiyou county.

* through sunday afternoon.

* a glacier on mount shasta has broken...releasing large
quantities of mud...rocks and water. flood waters are moving
down mud creek and pilgrim creek from mid way up mount shasta to
just north of highway 89 where waters are currently dammed.

* water continues to accumulate upstream behind the debris flow
and may break free and flow downstream across highway 89 at any
time. this drainage flows past highway 89 approximately 4 to 5
miles east of mccloud...which is where the flood threat exists.

* the amount of water building up behind the debris flow is not
known at this time...but it may be substantial. if and when this
water is released it may create significant flooding on highway
  89. the flood waters may be swift moving and very dangerous.
motorists on highway 89 east of mccloud are urged to use extreme
caution tonight as flooding may be sudden and flood waters are
very difficult to see at night.

* in addition...flooding is already occurring further up pilgrim
  creek. see pdxffwmfr for details.

* this flood watch may be upgraded to a warning...extended or
canceled as new information is received.

* for a detailed view of the hazard area...visit

precautionary/preparedness actions...

a flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

you should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
