...high seas this afternoon through friday night...

.a west-northwest swell will build over the coastal waters
this afternoon and bring high seas through friday night. combined
seas will peak at 12 to 16 feet in the outer coastal waters
between 30 and 60 nm from the coast and 8 to 12 feet in the inner
coastal waters within 30 nm of the coast, with a period between
16 and 18 seconds. this will create hazardous boating conditions
for small craft. navigation through entrances to harbors and bays,
especially mission bay, will be difficult due to breaking waves.
seas will gradually diminish friday afternoon and friday night.

...small craft advisory for hazardous seas now in effect from
2 pm this afternoon to 4 am pst saturday...

* waves/seas...combined seas 5 to 7 feet today building to 12 to
16 feet in the outer coastal waters and 8 to 12 feet in the
inner coastal waters tonight. the predominant swell will be from
280 degrees with a period of 16-18 seconds. combined seas will
diminish to 8 to 11 feet in the outer coastal waters and 6 to 9
feet in the inner coastal waters friday night.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

a small craft advisory for hazardous seas means that waves are
expected to be hazardous to small craft. mariners should avoid
shoaling areas. long period swell can sharpen into large breaking
waves in shoaling areas. it is not unusual for waves to break
much farther from shoaling areas than is normally experienced.
remember...breaking waves can easily capsize even larger vessels.
