...early season heat wave will impact the region through the
memorial day weekend into next week...

unseasonably hot temperatures will impact much of southeast south
carolina and southeast georgia again today as dry high pressure
builds across the region. the combination of near record highs in
the upper 90s to near 100 degrees inland from the coast and
moderate humidity levels will push heat indices into the 99 to
103 degree range this afternoon. residents and visitors to the
area should exercise caution as heat of this magnitude, especially
so early in the season, could become hazardous if precautions are
not taken.

this period of record to near record warmth will continue through
the memorial day weekend and likely extend well into next week
with temperatures nearing the century mark each afternoon away
from the coast.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. when
possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

look before you lock. do not leave children or pets unattended in
a hot vehicle.

...record heat expected through memorial day weekend...

an extended period of unseasonably hot temperatures is expected
through the middle of next week across north and central georgia.

widespread high temperatures in the mid to upper 90s are expected,
with some locations exceeding 100 degrees, especially along and south
of a columbus to macon to warrenton line in middle georgia. these
temperatures are around 15 degrees above normal for late may. in
addition, little relief is expected during the night as temperatures
only fall into the 70s in many locations. in addition, little to no
precipitation is expected in the area until possibly the end of next
week. the unusual heat this early in the season will likely break
several daily high temperature records across the region and will put
all-time monthly records in jeopardy over the memorial day weekend.

please take extra precautions for the heat by remaining hydrated,
avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, and limiting strenuous
activities when spending time outdoors. also, "look before you lock",
and don't leave children or pets unattended in a hot vehicle.
