* from this evening through late sunday night

* recent rainfall has set the stage for a significant flooding
event this weekend. a slow moving and potent storm system will
interact with a very moist airmass to produce heavy rainfall
over the weekend. rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches are likely
with locally higher amounts possible across southeastern
  missouri and southern illinois.

* heavy rainfall will result in flooding of low lying or poor
drainage areas...and ultimately dangerous flash flooding on
smaller creeks and streams. moderate to major flooding is also
possible on larger streams and rivers.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

a flash flood watch is advanced notice that conditions are
favorable that may lead to flash flooding. people in the watch
area, especially in flood prone areas, should use this time to
make preparations just in case. stay informed, and be ready for
quick action if flooding is observed or if a flash flood warning
is issued.

* from this evening through late sunday night

* the watch is generally in effect for locations along and west of
a line extending from near fulton, kentucky to mount carmel,
illinois, including all of southeast missouri and southern
illinois. much of this region already received 1.5 to 3 inches
of rainfall wednesday and wednesday night. numerous
thunderstorms with very heavy rain are expected to develop later
this afternoon and continue tonight. some areas of western
kentucky and the southern tip of illinois may see a break in the
precipitation saturday into saturday night, but will then see
more thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall move in from the
west late saturday night and through the day sunday. from 3 to 6
inches of rain could fall in the watch area by the time the
entire event is finished sunday night. locally higher amounts
are also possible where numerous thunderstorms repeat.

the flash flood watch continues for

* from this evening through sunday evening.

* periods of thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall will occur
from tonight through sunday. storm total rainfall amounts from 4
to 6 inches are expected, with localized amounts of 8 inches or
more likely. it is still unclear where the heaviest rainfall
will occur...although at this time the most probable axis of
highest precipitation amounts will be along and perhaps just
north of the interstate 44 corridor.

* with soils already saturated as well as creeks, streams, and
rivers running high, the potential for widespread and
significant flooding is becoming increasingly likely for
portions of the missouri ozarks. flooding of some creeks,
rivers, and low water crossings could last for several days
after the rain ends. areas that don't normally flood could
  flood in this event.

some main stem rivers that will experience significant rises and
potential flooding include the elk, spring, james, big piney,

stage.
