...high surf advisory now in effect until 6 pm edt tuesday...

* location...along ocean exposed beaches on the south coasts of
  massachusetts and rhode island.

* timing...late today through tuesday.

* surf and rip current risk...increasing long period southerly
  swell from distant hurricane maria will be moving into the south
  coastal waters through tuesday. this will result in rather high
  surf along the ocean exposed coastline and a high risk of
  dangerous rip currents.

* shoreline impacts...areas of beach erosion.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

a rip current...sometimes mistakenly called an undertow...is a
strong but narrow current of water flowing from the beach to the
surf zone. it can rapidly carry a swimmer into deeper water...and
exhaust an individual trying to swim against it.

in addition...viewers of large surf should stay in safe areas well
away from possible splashover. individual waves may be more than
twice the average wave height...which can sweep a person into the
water from what may seem to be a safe viewing area. falling into
turbulent and sometimes rocky waters can result in injury that
reduces the chance of survival.

...high rip current risk now in effect through monday evening...
...high surf advisory in effect from 6 am to 9 pm edt monday...

the national weather service in upton has issued a high surf
advisory, which is in effect from 6 am to 9 pm edt monday.

* locations...atlantic ocean beaches of suffolk county.

* rip current risk...high

* surf height...around 7 feet.

* timing...through monday evening.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore...which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. talk to lifeguards and beach officials to
learn about any surf hazards and heed their advice. pay attention
to flags and posted signs and swim in life guarded areas.

if you become caught in a rip current...yell for help. remain
calm...do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. if you have to swim out of a rip current...swim parallel to
shore. once you are away from the force of the rip current...
begin to swim back toward the beach. do not attempt to swim
directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

a high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area...producing rip currents and localized beach
