a marine weather statement has been issued for the following areas...
nearshore and open waters from st joseph to manistee mi...
a marine weather spotter reported a waterspout had occurred near st
joseph around 830 am. conditions are favorable for additional
waterspouts throughout the day. aditionally thunderstorms with
small hail and frequent cloud to water lighting are expected.
precautionary/preparedness actions...
mariners can expect gusty winds to around 30 knots...small hail...
locally higher waves...and lightning strikes. if waterspouts
occur... winds and waves may be much higher. boaters should be alert
to the potential for waterspouts and avoid them.

a marine weather statement has been issued for the following areas...
lake michigan michigan city in to st. joseph mi 5 nm offshore to
mid-line of lake....
at 846 am edt...doppler radar indicated a strong thunderstorm...
capable of producing winds to around 30 knots and small hail. this
thunderstorm was located 11 nm west of the st. joseph light...moving
northeast at 5 knots.
a waterspout has also been reported in association with these
showers over southern lake michigan over the past hour. conditions
remain favorable for the formation of additional waterspouts.
mariners should be alert to the possibility of waterspout
formation through this afternoon.
the strong thunderstorm will remain over mainly open waters.
precautionary/preparedness actions...
mariners can expect gusty winds to around 30 knots...locally higher
waves...and lightning strikes. boaters should seek safe harbor
immediately until this storm passes.
report severe weather to the coast guard or nearest law enforcement
agency. they will relay your report to the national weather service
forecast office.

lake effect showers and perhaps a thunderstorm continue through
the day. conditions will be very favorable for the development of
waterspouts.
waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous
seas. small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and
suddenly higher waves. mariners on lake michigan are urged to
exercise caution tonight and seek safe harbor if threatening
weather approaches.

extending from near knapps narrows bridge to 6 nm south of taylors
island...moving northeast at 20 knots.
hazard...wind gusts 34 knots or greater and small hail.

impact...boaters in small craft could be thrown overboard by
suddenly higher winds and waves capsizing their vessel.
