...sharply colder weather begins tonight with mixed rain and snow
possible to the lowest elevations through saturday...
...freezing rain possible in some valleys monday morning...
a strong cold front is beginning to move across southwest
washington and northwest oregon this afternoon...bringing a sharp
drop in temperature along with it. snow levels are starting out
well above the cascade passes...but they will lower dramatically
behind the front.
based on the latest observations and webcam imagery...it appears
the coldest air is lagging a few hours behind the front. this
should reduce the threat of heavy snow in the cascades and
foothills tonight. however...mountain roads will be wet from the
rain today and may ice over as temperatures drop below freezing
tonight.
mixed rain and snow showers are likely saturday all the way down
to the valley floor. however...any accumulation should be
confined to the hills above 500 to 1000 ft...and would likely be
limited to a slushy inch or so. drier air should bring a quick
end to any lingering snow showers saturday evening.
strong east winds will develop saturday night and sunday through
the columbia river gorge...with gusts of 50 to 70 mph at times.
east winds will spread across the portland and vancouver metro
area as well...with gusts 40 to 50 mph possible late saturday
night through sunday.
the cold and dry air ushered in by this wind may bring some
potential for freezing rain monday morning...but confidence is low
and details are highly uncertain at this point. continue to
monitor the latest forecasts through the weekend...as details
will become more refined as we get closer to the event.
