...moderate to heavy rainfall expected through thursday...

.high levels of atmospheric moisture combined with a stalled
frontal boundary will lead to repeated showers and thunderstorms
across east-central missouri during the overnight hours tonight.
additional heavy rainfall is likely through the day on thursday as a
strong cold front moves through the area. the combination of both
periods of heavy rain may lead to flash flooding across portions of
the watch area.

thursday evening...

the national weather service in pleasant hill has issued a

* flash flood watch for portions of east central kansas and 
  missouri...including the following areas...in east central 
  kansas...linn ks and miami. in missouri...bates...cass... 
  cooper...henry...howard...johnson mo...pettis and randolph. 

* from 7 pm cdt this evening through thursday evening

* the potential exists for several rounds of showers and
  thunderstorms from tonight through portions of the day on thursday.
  total rainfall may exceed 2 to 3 inches in localized areas which
  may cause areas of flash flooding.

* flash flooding is possible across the watch area. significant 
  ponding of water in urban areas is also possible. small 
  streams may rise above their banks and cause flooding of low 
  lying areas including roadways. flash flooding at night is 
  extremely dangerous. 

a flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

you should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

the flash flood watch continues for

* portions of central missouri...east central missouri and 
  northeast missouri...including the following counties...in 
  central missouri...audrain mo...boone mo...callaway mo...cole 
  mo...moniteau mo and osage mo. in east central missouri...
  gasconade mo and montgomery mo. in northeast missouri...
  monroe mo.

* through this evening

* heavy rain is expected to come in waves of thunderstorms
  overnight and during the day on thursday. rainfall amounts in
  excess of 3 inches with locally higher amounts are possible.

* heavy rainfall will result in flooding of low lying or poor 
  drainage areas...and ultimately dangerous flash flooding on 
  smaller creeks and streams. significant rises on larger 
  streams and rivers will also be possible. 

precautionary/preparedness actions...

a flash flood watch means that flash flooding is possible but not
imminent in the watch area. people in the watch area should be
aware of the possibility of heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
check your preparedness requirements...especially if you live in
flood prone areas. stay informed...and be ready for quick action
if flooding is observed or if a flash flood warning is issued.

thunderstorms will continue to develop and slide south across
portions of western and central missouri...and far southeastern
kansas through the overnight hours. additional thunderstorms will
then develop ahead of and along a cold front on thursday. along
with rainfall that occurred earlier wednesday evening...storm
total rainfall by thursday night will range from two to locally
five inches of rain across the watch area.

  miller...morgan...phelps...polk...pulaski...st. clair and 
  vernon.

* through thursday evening.

* two to five inches of rain is forecast within the flash flood
  watch area. thunderstorms capable of producing excessive
  rainfall are expected to train across portions of southeast
  kansas and the missouri ozarks tonight...with additional storms
  expected during the day thursday.

* flash flooding risks are increasing over portions of southeast 
  kansas and the missouri ozarks for tonight and through 
  thursday. flooding in this region typically consists of small 
  streams and creeks flooding low lying areas...including low 
  water crossing and actual roadways. 

anyone that has interests within the osage...little osage...
sac...marmaton...pomme de terre...and niangua river basins...
should monitor future warnings and statements tonight and
thursday.
