...snow creating hazardous travel conditions in northern wisconsin...
snow showers were widespread across far northern wisconsin at
midnight. the snow was falling quite heavily at times...with many
locations in vilas and northern oneida counties reporting 1 to 2
inches of snow already. winds were also quite gusty...and
producing some blowing and drifting of the snow. travel conditions
across the region were reported to be poor...due to low
visibilities and very slippery roadways.
the heaviest snow is falling now and will continue through about
200 am or 300 am. although snow showers will continue after that
time...the intensity of the snow is expected to diminish.
the snow showers will expand south and east...and will affect the
remainder of north-central and northeast wisconsin in the hours
after midnight. accumulations in these areas will be much
lighter...but there could still be enough snow to coat the
roadways and lead to hazardous travel conditions.
anyone traveling across northern wisconsin should use extra
caution.

...a brief preview of wintry weather expected overnight...
an intense upper level disturbance will move southeast across the
area overnight. much colder air will surge into the area as the
disturbance passes through. the sharply colder temperatures...
combined with strong north winds and snow showers...will produce a
brief period of wintry conditions...especially over northern and
eastern wisconsin.
snow showers will shift southeast overnight...and should arrive in
east central wisconsin between midnight and 2 am. brief heavy snow
showers are possible in northern and eastern wisconsin
overnight...but are most likely over vilas county...where lake
enhancement will occur. snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are
likely in vilas county by morning...with around an inch over much
of far northeast wisconsin. a dusting to a half inch is possible
in parts of east central wisconsin. travel conditions could become
hazardous late tonight into early friday...especially over far
northern wisconsin.
very windy conditions are expected late tonight into friday...
with the strongest winds occurring over the eastern fox valley and
lakeshore areas. wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph are expected across
most of the area...with 45 to 50 mph gusts near the lake and bay.
locally higher wind gusts are possible over northern door county.
winds this strong can make driving high profile vehicles difficult
and can cause minor tree and power line damage.
most people will want to find their winter coat...hat...and
gloves before venturing outdoors friday morning...as wind chill
readings are forecast to drop into the teens to lower 20s. winds
are expected to slowly diminish late friday afternoon. however...
it will still be quite windy and very chilly for trick-or-treaters
in eastern wisconsin.

...first snow of the season expected for much of the area friday
night into saturday...
a developing area of low pressure will send a strong cold front south
across eastern kentucky late friday into friday night. this low
pressure system and associated cold front will produce periods of
precipitation from friday into saturday night. temperatures are
expected to drop sharply friday evening into the overnight hours.
these falling temperatures...will allow rain to mix with and
gradually change to snow...starting in the highest elevations along
the virginia border early friday evening. snow levels will lower
through the night with valley locations possibly mixing with and
changing to snow towards dawn saturday. in addition to the cold and
snowy conditions...winds will be brisk behind the cold front with
some gusts up to 25 mph friday evening possible.
at this time...most of the snow accumulation will be in areas above
1500 feet...where 1 to 3 inches of snow will be possible. the
highest elevations in far eastern kentucky...above 3000 feet...could
see locally higher amounts in the 3 to 6 inch range and a winter
weather advisory is now in effect for the counties that border
virginia friday night into saturday. most of the snow accumulations
will reside on grassy and elevated surfaces due to warm ground
temperatures. little if any snow accumulation is expected across the
bluegrass region or in valley locations.
in addition...freezing temperatures are expected friday night...
saturday night...and sunday night. a hard freeze may occur in the i-75
corridor saturday night...with a hard freeze and frost expected
area-wide sunday night. those with sensitive plants will need to take
action to protect them through the weekend.
