Yeah camp for free at any of the numerous spots along the river at Sherman. Or check out Brannon Island State Park. Its gotta be cheaper than $500.

Are you with family or any non-sailors? Do you have a good wind shelter?
I have camped wild there many times, usually for 3 to 5 days at a time with my family. Wife sails and boys 6 and 9 are trying. I have checked out the new camp ground at the sign, and it looks like you get grass, hot water, wind protection, space to leave your gear rigged, bbq pit and common spaces for the kids to play. If I were planning a month on
Sherman, even without kids, I would definitely pay the $500 as this would make the entire experience more fun. Besides, the best chop is right there. For $16 per day its a great deal. I enjoy remote camping and in fact just returned from San Carlos.
At Sherman there is not much else to do besides sail. No fun when youre not on the water, so you might as well pay a little and camp luxuriously. At the other established camp grounds youre just too far away from the sailing. $16 per day is less than we pay at most
Gorge campgrounds.
