I have a standard windsurfing helmet with a face mask: one bar coming down from the top connecting to one across the bottom. Ive never had problems with visability--only picking my nose. At first you notice the bars but very quickly your eyes simply ignore it.

They may not be trendy but after getting whacked really good in the head a couple yrs ago I ALWAYS wear mine. And I just wear my old vetta mtn bike helmet, nothing fancy, probably looks stupid but it was the same in the early 80s when I skied the steep and deep in German Army wool pants and a baggy shell when everyone else wore pink spandex... now look at the slopes..

Protect your head and live to sail another day!

I like my ProTech, hard shell, fits well, forget I am wearing it after 5 minutes. Plus, my sister is a therapist in a brain injury clinic and her stories scare me!!!

Also dont forget the PFD.

There may never be such a thing as a comfortable helmet or one thats cool to all our reckless and fashion-conscious comrades out there, but I will never sail without one again. I was sailing in napeague Harbor (Long Island NY) last week, and hit a new sandbar. While I landed on my ass, the mast followed me windward and konked me. Luckily, this was not a direct hit, but it tore a 3x3 inch flap of skin and meat right off my skull. I was always one to wear my bright pink Deluge helmet in 4.7 and smaller weather, but I was on a 7.3 when this happened. I am buying a Gath so I have some variety, but I will never sail without one again. I came a couple inches from a serious caving-in of the melon. I got 45 stitches after dumping my rig and trudging and paddling upwind for 1/2 hour to get back to the beach, chumming with hemaglobin all the while. Not fun. Lucky for me my bald and grey head can only be improved cosmetically by a scar and a new helmet. IE-mail me at jcharde@hamptons.com if you want to see what feeling geeky in a helmet can cost you.
