A few days ago I received this email from George Haye and was surprised that no one had said anything on this forum about this.
Death of a wonderful man-
So sad to be reporting this, but: last Friday, Sept. 15, a short time after 5PM, beloved local windsurfer David Rea, 45, was hit by a truck and killed while rollerblading and attempting to cross the
street at the corner of Fell and Stanyan in San Francisco. Casual acquaintances may remember Dave at Candlestick Point, or Third Avenue
sitting in the sun behind his white Subaru Outback - with his bald
head, full beard, sweet demeanor, and sharp wit always keeping him
well-encircled by friends. Those who were close to him know that they will be hard-pressed to ever forget him.
While not enjoying the wind and snow, David chose to dedicate himself to doing the extremely difficult and heart-breaking work of a
nurse in the HIV and Psych units at San Francisco General Hospital. He left the hospital after work Friday in a jubilant mood, preparing to celebrate with his partner, Jay, because the deed on their new home had just been recorded in their names that day. Instead, David
returned to his hospital later that night, and to the anguish of friends, co-workers, and patients alike, he died of severe head trauma. After speaking with Davids partner, Jay, today, there are a few things to relate:
Having known only a couple of Davids windsurfing friends, Jay has been deeply touched by the calls of support (and the large number of
calls) he has received from windsurfers over the last few days. He has been delighted to hear many humerous stories about David from his windsurfing buddies. He was also been moved to hear that along with
the Park Service, several Candlestick regulars will be dedicating a new bench near the main launch area, in Davids name.
A memorial service will be held Saturday September 30 at 1PM at
Candlestick Point State Park. Head into the parking area for the
State Park and go all the way until the far end of the parking lot.
The service will be near the main windsurfing rigging area.
Cards to express condolences can be sent to: Jay Egger, 332 Pierce St., SF, CA, 94117.
David dedicated his life to assisting those in pain. Part of this
commitment was to support Project Inform, a SF-based charity
providing information, inspiration, and advocacy for people living with HIV/AIDS. Those who wish to make a donation to Project Inform in honor of David Rea may do so online at
(http://www.projinf.org/develop/) or by mailing a check to: Project Inform, Donation in Honor of David Rea, 205 13TH Street, Suite 2001,
SF, CA, 94103-2461, Phone: (415) 558-8669. |

Sounds like a truly wonderful person - too bad I never had the fortune to meet him...
