I would love to forecast winds for Southern California but if would take a year of study and the forecasts would be pretty the first year.. Other than the winds from the North Pacific High many of the Southern California winds are pretty local and I have a feeling that locals could do a better job than I could at first. If there was lots of demand it is something we could consider. Shoot me some requests and we will see….

For both San Luis and Sherman Island a moderate to deep marine layer and a good pressure gradient are prerequisites for good wind. But what time it blows and how long it blows and when those prerequisites appear are determined by a complex interaction of variables that I am just getting a handle on. Because of the height of Pacheco Pass San Luis needs a really thick marine layer and a SW to WSW ocean push. If the push is from the NW or the marine layer is to thin then San Luis will not go off. Sherman Island on the other hand can work with anything from a S to SW to WSW to W push because it is wide open to winds from all those directions. If we have a southerly surge San Luis gets that before Sherman Island while if it is a more westerly push Sherman Island will blow first and harder.

What makes those different pushes? Wow I could go on forever but some of the easy ones are Cut-Off Lows, troughs, strong SBA-SFO pressure gradients.

Mike Godsey.
