I had a long swim at Crissy yesterday when the wind died suddenly. The sky was clear when I got there, but clouds were rolling in. I was suspicious, but went out anyway. Was that a poor decision??

The presence of cloud cover does not in general signal the end of wind. This depends a lot on the local geography. The SF bay often responds to meterological events that have a large characteristic scale. It may be cloudy at Crissy but sunny inland, so the thermal wind could continue. At Cabrillo, where I sail a fair amount, local thermal effects seem to predominate. Even high stratus cloudcover can shut that place down. On the other hand, Ive sailed there when the rest of the L.A. - OC coast was absolutely dead! Only its local thermal was working. Mysterious!
