Long time windsurfing friend, first day out had a good crash on his first flight. Ended up with a sprained ankle that ended his day. He was on a non foiling board with a full length mast. I saw it. I'm not sure a foil would have skipped off it nose. I'm pretty sure that a short 24 inch mast and a foil board would have ended up with a short splash down and most likely not even a fall. Something to think about for us old guys. |

He's lucky if it ended just his day. I've had some ankle sprains that crippled me for months, still hurt a year later, and are still problematic six decades later because of their permanent damage to my proprioception and thus my balance. That's not rare; they are not just nuisances to be shrugged off, and are hands down the foremost reason I don't sail with only my back foot unstrapped. It doesn't take the infamous Lisfranc injury to put a permanent hitch in our getalong. Tell your bud to evaluate and treat the sprain properly. |

My first love back in the day was basketball. I remember crawling off the floor in tears after a bad twist. That one ended my chance at a pro career. That and I'm 5'10 and can't jump... |

I don't get the joke. At my 30th HS reunion, classmates who played football in those days of almost no rules were hobbled by injuries from their glory days. Running back Jimmy, which would have been my position, could hardly walk. Many gymnasts fare even worse.
A No Fear attitude is arguably even more threatening when young simply because it has the opportunity to levy decades more pain and disability upon us and because some parts are not fully matured yet. I did a lot of crazy physical stuff, but I did draw some lines even in HS. Even so, my ankles were so bad after their first injuries that one rolled over and broke when I was simply walking across the gym floor in Jr high.
Now, at the other end of my time window, such an injury could end my WSing permanently; buds thought that trashed knee 5 years ago would do it. Countless sports and weekend warrior careers were ended or heavily impacted by ankle and/or other -- especially soft-tissue -- injuries in their youth. Advising people to ignore such prospects is irresponsible, and leverage is a bitch ... just one reason I don't wear stiletto heels. |
