Much of what defines the board character is the shape, this includes bottom contours, rails, width the widest and 30cm back from the nose/30cm forward from tail. The tail shape itsself will have some effect.
The bottom cutouts , having had these on ,seem more a gimmick to me.
My Hypersonic and Formula have them.
Tabou 3S have done some tails, duck for instance that they did away with and now for a few years .trending back to cut outs.
Multi fins change some traits but not the overall character.
On a tri fin, their are 2 drawbacks, the additional fin area creates drag, this makes the board slower to plane, and decreases top speed.
PLUS side It will turn sharper, because the pivot point is shorter, it will go upwind (extra area) improved, you can sail in shallow water. Changing fin size is almost eliminated , much broader range.
Dealing with 2 extra fins , that in many cases can be left installed for transport or not is not a bother. Some sailors experiment on size , asymmetrical foils, in the same manner that some move the mast track.

My tris (2014 Naish waves) use such small main and side fins that the overall area is smaller than a comparable single. Even the 95L runs a short-chorded 18 cm fin. |

Having looked the bottom of a 3S (but not sailed it). My impression was the cut-outs were to add the effect of Vee once planing which should, I think, smooth things out.
In either case the owner loves the board and uses it for everything from lakes to the Oregon coast. |

I like Naish, what I see in 2014 is a 70 —90 liter range, no 95.
A 28cm single fin would have about 280 cm2 . Using the specs by Naish that show the entire range from 70–90 using the same fins, quite odd that, they come to 278cm2.
So they are less in total using these figures. NAISH show 16.51 and 10.16 length .
Conclusion : correct but wrong _________________ K4 fins

Windsurfing is expensive when getting new gear. If some one is looking for a, whatever, and I see a good price, I'm happy to let them know. Its called positive thinking. I and several others are extremely happy with the 3s board for all the reasons that the Op wants in a board. I didn't say buy the 3s at Isthmus. I just wanted to let him know about the close outs available at this shop on several boards in the size range he is looking for. I bought One board from them and had great service. There are very few brick and mortar shops left. Why not support them if you can. Windance is another great shop. I get most of my gear from them. To add a little more "positive thinking" they have the Sling Shot Dialer 130 foil board for $749 better hurry if you want one... |

I know Isthmus from way back, in fact the very first day I was ever in Wisconsin to consider moving there from San Francisco (lived 1/2 mile from Crissy.... oh well) it was a big windy NE day and Gary and David Stone were there sailing in Milwaukee. This is over 30 years ago. Since then I buy various things from them, Windance, Bigwinds, Southport, Hot Sails Maui, etc. Just need to pull the trigger... simmer... 3s.... simmer....3s. |

Ola worked for Starboard designing. He now is with Simmer .
He was very active on the Boards UK forum ,he has provided me with many installation dimensions and tips.
Not saying because he is with Simmer , thats your choice on a board.
Anymore than to purchase from a particular dealer.
You might call FOX Watersports in Buxton NC, for some additional insight on Simmer. _________________ K4 fins

I own the Exocet Cross 94 and it works well for me in the conditions you mention. I use it mostly for lake chop/swell and 2-3 foot waves. It is a good "all-arounder". I have used sails 5.0-6.5m. Best with my 5.8m. My wt: 185 lbs |
