to the OP, sounds like 5.0 is a pretty big sail for the stated wind conditions given your weight.

For guys who sail rigs that like a lot of downhaul, you can still go overboard and put too much.

For guys like me sailing freestyle sails which require less downhaul tension, we can also go overboard and under downhaul making the sail feel draggy when planing and generally sluggish and unresponsive.

And then there's everything in between.

The trend in modern wave sails (which I assume your 5.0 is) is not to have quite as much looseness as wave sails from say the early 2000s. Of course this varies from sail to sail, brand to brand, etc...

when I sail w/ LeeD/zirtaeb, I'm often on a smaller sail and board than he is despite weighing ~40lbs more. And we generally both have fun and are properly powered... although if someone's unhappy it's usually me b/c I rigged too small. Different strokes for different folks.

the chronic slog then plane thing is just plain annoying to me.

sails and boards now are so refined that i find myself being able to flick around rather large kits with ease. the punta san carlos culture does not match well with my tastes. would much rather rig sizes for lulls and tune for gusts so long as conditions are 7.5 or better.

again personal tastes make for divergent choices. not wrong, just different.
