I can foil in almost weed soup so long as I've got a little excess power to get going. When up on the wing weeds are virtually unnoticeable.

Nope, read whole thing. Most of your statement s, like not getting better performance in light wind, physical to pump, why do I need harness, are what foiling in beginning is.

Ok. I guess I am not quite understanding what you are saying then.

grantmac017,

I can see less weed drag once up on the foil, but how do you get through the weeds to fly the foil?

What I'm saying, Couch, you making conclusions based on very limited experience, in case of weeds as you wrote yourself,no experience. Weeds generally just come off the wings during the flight, I'm guessing vibration shakes them off but not sure.

Only the mast holds weed when slogging, which adds a bit of drag until you get flying. Once up it usually clears. The wings simply don't care. This is thick floating mats of eel grass, fresh water stuff might be different.

I wasn't thinking along the lines of eel grass when talking about weeds. I was thinking along the lines of kelp in the ocean and the thick, moss type of grass that is in warm fresh water lakes. The thick fresh water weeds generally grow in shallower water so that is probably a moot point. Kelp however, I will remain skeptical of. Nothing personal, but I do not trust your experience with eel grass to apply to kelp. My experience with eel grass is that it slows you down when windsurfing. Kelp, on the other hand, can be like hitting a sand bar. I would first have to see someone blast through a kelp bed or floating patch of kelp without face planting before I would try that stunt.

Some weed fins can't shed this stuff, it's in literal mats. We also have bull kelp but that stays in isolated areas, I've hit a few random pieces on the foil without issue. You can barely paddle a surfboard through the thick kelp beds so I doubt a foil could manage.

In Miami we get all kinds of weeds including sargasso. Foil does much better than formula fin, but there's a limit to it.
