Has anyone brought a windsurfing harness as a carry on to Maui from SFO? Did TSA pull it claiming it could be used as a weapon? I'd rather not check it and pay for it twice. Yes, I know they rent them along with gear, but I want my own. They don't rent mine and my back likes mine.

Its not listed on the TSA website. I've already written them.

Answers about your personal experience before this Sunday are appreciated.

Wear it, and it doesn't even count as carry-on.

I lined up at the Albuquerque, NM airport check-in counter wearing only board shorts and a harness. The funny looks I got were mainly because of the fresh and still-falling foot of snow on the ground. Next stops: LA and Maui.

I finally completed the install to Facebook. I have been assimilated. Now that I am part of the hive mind, fake news, and all the other mayhem, I have the official TSA reply:

All Good!

I will wear my harness around my shoulder bag while traveling. I think it makes a better fashion statement that way. To each his own.

No shirt, no shoes, no problem?

I have taken a windsurfing harness (w/ Reactor Bar attached) in my carry-on bag successfully on domestic flights to Maui, LA, and Boston with no problems. Well, except the one time I left my safety knife in my harness back pocket, and I got pulled aside by the TSA guys. I explained my way out of it, but I had to leave the knife at the airport.

Many trips to Vela/Baja. Usually try to carry essential gear in small backpack so I can sail immediately upon arrival even if main luggage lost/delayed. That includes harness, boardshorts, booties, helmet, etc. First time I took WS magazine along to show authorities what a harness is used for, just in case. Never a problem (knock on wood).

Well, I DID change back into street clothes before boarding.

Did the same thing on Grand Cayman and Maui, simply because I was still wet from the ocean.

Mind you, this was prior to the whole concept of security checks.
