A bit of an unusual news. We are preparing for hurricane Irma to pass close but a bit more north of the Dominican Republic's north coast. It looks like winds may range from 20 to 50 knots from the West (underside of hurricane).
Waves will range from 7m (early Thursday morning) to 4m (end of day Thursday), starting sideshore to full onshore by the end of the day. The wind and wave will almost always be in opposite direction as the hurricane moves from east to west in a counterclockwise direction. Also, low tide will be at 3pm, and therefore I'm hoping, dampens the reach of those more onshore waves. I'm expecting the beach configuration to change quite a bit as the sand is moved around.
The heavy rain will likely cause severe flooding and lots of debris, branches, trees and trash may end up in the water.
Here are some of the links I have been using to follow Irma's path:

Tracking it so far, we have an apartment in Fajardo, NE side of the island, just up the road from 7 Seas Beach, which will flood for sure. Brought all the windsurf gear inside, closed all doors and windows, left one window open 3" to equalize pressures. Looks bad for Las Croabas, where a small marina and some food shacks and two restaurant's will be flooded and wind damaged. Right now, noon PR time, it's 25 mph steady at 7 Seas, where we windsurf.

I see 28 G 36mph in San Juan?
82-83mph in the British Islands close but away from the eye.
I have been looking at the storm surge phenomenon and didn't get the answer I was looking for. Can it happen even the storm is to the side of the coast. Does it happen after a few days of strong winds. Does it happen if the coast is rather flat, etc.
Anyway, with waves over 7m in the forecast timed with the high tide, but with offshore opposite winds, I wonder if it has the potential to create a tsunami type of effect?
San Juan has 9.9m waves in the forecast so similar situation...
How is the wave situation in Puerto Rico right now?

Just checked the waves on the reef here (2.2m on windguru) 8-9m full close-outs on the reef... What will 7.3m bring?

It's passing us, offshore super gusty winds to finish it off, 5 to 60 knots my guess. Periods of rain but still quite light. I think other parts of the country got the rain probably where there wasn't as much winds.
Winds ended up around 25 to 45 knots with sometimes nothing and other times 60 knots.
