I'll be on island from 11/5 to 11/12 this fall. I'm looking to rent a car that I can put gear inside of. Its only me, so a compact Ford Escort or the like should work fine. I checked the old threads regarding this topic and the information is stale. Anyone with a lead on who to contact over there to set something up is much appreciated.
I would rather avoid the big companies mainly because the newer cars all have electronic key fobs that cannot get wet. When you hide those keys on the car, or even using the lockbox, the doors open because of the proximity sensors. I got a Nissan in June and had to hide the key in random spots around the beaches. Nearly lost it once, when the trashcan under which the key was hidden got moves by some folks doing a BBQ. Its so much better to simply take the key with you. Also, I don't trust those water packs to keep things dry. I'd rather use an older vehicle. Less worries overall. |

| Aloha Rent a Car (formerly Al West's Maui Vans). You can pick the age and the seating for the vehicle you want. The no-brainer is to get one of the middle-aged Chrysler minivans. An actual key detaches from the fob and you can carry it in your boardshorts or around your neck. |

Try Manaloha rent a car. We've had very good luck with them. Small business where everything is arranged through email and via their web site. They leave your rental car parked in kahalui airport lot - there's a key box on the tail gate. You just through your stuff in and go and return the car to the same lot when you're done. You can rent newer cars to junkers - lots of options and they are geared toward windsurfers and surfers. Highly recommend.

Mauivans is Al West's website that still works. (They merged with Aloha Vans)
They rent older or newer cars and vans as mentioned, and will pick you up from the airport. |

Hi Gerrit, we always used Kimo rentals, high mileage, but they run. Cheap. Nice people. For the waterproof container, I've tried them all and the only one that really works well is sold at Adventure Sports in Maui. It has a magnetic enclosure and I think it's around 30 bucks. It really works and is durable. Folds up and fits in your board s horts pocket. Stolen cars are a problem here and I am really leery about leaving my keys near the car. Or inside if I separate the manual key from the fob. I just take it with me. Recently a GMC SUV was stolen, used to bash open the door at Hi Tech, where Go Pros and drones were stolen. Then it was driven into a field and torched. I'd hate for that to happen to me.

FWIW: Those electronic fobs have a mechanical door unlocking key snapped inside, removed by releasing a tiny latch and pulling on the key ring. You can carry the mechanical key with you. Wrap the fob in aluminum foil to cut down its range, and hide somewhere away from the ignition in the car. Try to start the car with the push button to verify the key fob is not detected. |

Another note about fobs.
Nissan and Infinity all have those proximity sensors for door locks but some new cars don't.It's mostly the cars that have a button on the door handle so you can open the locked door without hitting the unlock button on the fob. My 2015 Dodge Caravan doesn't have that button and you can't open the locked doors with the fob locked inside the car (no need to wrap foil). There Is also a manual key hidden inside the fob that can open the door.(as mentioned). Dodge (at least the lower-end models) also make you insert the fob into a slot in the dash to start the ignition, so even if they do break in they can't start it without finding the fob (a better design imho). Another tip, if you lock the door with the lock button on the door, the alarm won't go off when you unlock it manually with the key (the alarm is only armed with the fob). |
