I've seen a few posts about the Vineyard, but haven't seen anything on a few places. I was looking specifically for information on Katama Bay and East Beach. I have a friend that lives on Chappy, so it would be much easier to hit those spots if they are any good.

Katama bay is a fun, flat water spot that works best in SW. I'm not sure of the best launch from Chappy. Just take care no avoid fishing/oyster nets and shallow spots.

East Beach is basically a flat to bumpy sailing session in the prevailing SW winds. It is an offshore-wind session with nothing until Cape Cod, if you're lucky. Take care.

If your friend has a good 4x4 with an over-sand permit, launch from Cape Pogue and sail across Edgartown outer harbor into Cow Bay. Best in SW, but check your gear because sailing W from Cape Pogue puts you nearly 2 miles offshore. It's not that big a deal as land with come to you on either tack, but know what you are getting into. The sailing can be phenomenal in Cow Bay with 20+ knots when its only 15 knots on State Beach.

Thanks, Dan. Exactly what I was looking for. And yes, they have a 4x4 and an over sand permit. Now I just have to see how the ferry likes my coffin bag.
