We don't leave an electronic key in the car, just paranoid.
We each have a valet key, and leave the electronic key at home.

I use one of those magnetic cases on ebay. It fits my key fob thingy...and i then put it on th einside wheel well. I dont really do this to prevent theft....its so i dont lock myself out which almost happened. Putting on a wetsuitor drysuit in car....my elbow hit the lock switch. Didn't realize it. Closed the door, and said"oh sh!$". Luckily the rear hatch was still up.

I let my wife have the electronic key and I exclusively use the non-electronic one, which is fine to get wet.

I hook the key ring to a kite leash attachment ring on my harness bar.

Or if I'm wearing boardshorts that have a secure key pocket with a key leash in it, I put the key in there.
