trying to figure out what would be the board top speed if fully powered. So far I had it at 40mph with 20-30knts wind and 9 m sail

here is the link! at that speed it behaves just as well as a 125 JP that I use to ride. Impressive

thanks

I think your speedometer is broken...
Also, if you improve your form you should be able to squeeze at least another 5 mph out of it... Isobars?

My guess is an integrative/cumulative/summing error in his GPS system. Notice his speed in increasing fairly consistently with time and/or distance, yet the rate of passing pieces of chop -- i.e., the scenery beside his hull -- is not speeding up. IOW, he's measuring distance or time and displaying it as mph.

it does drop off at the end as he slows though. Somethings not
right none the less. 40MPH is smoke'n fast on a windsurfer, and I'm not
sure you can keep a Kona from going airborne at that speed. But who
am I to argue with a little speedometer in the video window. In fact I might
try something like that in one of my videos because I kinda like it.

He did say he was on a 9M sail in 20 to 30 knot winds, I know I couldn't
do that.

Just so you know why the flaming is going to get bad in here...

40mph is difficult to reach on equipment that's made to go that fast. The only person I've seen do it live is Boris Vujasinovic, and he was on a small slalom board with a big sail.

So you aren't going 40. You may be pushing 25 (probably closer to 20), which is still very fast on that board with that sail.

Did you notice that the speedometer is reading 21/22 MPH while you are just getting started and just hooking in? Then, you get to planing speed and the speedo is still at 21MPH. Something is not right if your base speed started at over 20. That said, a good friend of mine has hit some very impressive speeds on his Kona but he can post here and tell his own story. In his case, I was at Isabella and was a witness.

I went 30.5mph on my Kona, with a 7.8 Sailworks NX and a 38 cm. racing fin, using my Garmin Foretrex 101. It was pretty scary! I've gone 40.3 on slalom gear with the same GPS, have a hard time imagining going 40 on a Kona. Of course I have a hard time imagining going over 60 mph, too, but that's official. Possible to go 40 on a Kona, I suppose.

Does standing on it in the back of your van count?

I'll give it a try with my GT31 and Kona. I was out today at Crissy Field on my Kona and hit 27knots on my Garmin but I think the GT31 is more accurate.
I'll try to wear it tomorrow for the Bridge to Bridge race. Hopefully it will blow.
Stand by. Sail On!

Here's some kona speed on film from my first Kona many years ago.
