Was that smoke at the beach or just the fog rolling in?

You guys have got nothing compared to what we've been dealing with here on the central coast. The last few days haven't been too bad, but we've been living under a red sun for over a month. I went w'surfing a couple of weeks ago at Arroyo and we couldn't even see the castle, smoke all the way down to the base of the foothills, and that was just the smoke from the fire at the extreme north end of Big Sur.
Now we have the Chimney fire, but the winds have mostly been out of the southwest so the smoke hasn't been that bad. It looks like the western side of that fire has stalled which is great, the castle will be fine, but I'm feeling pretty sorry for the people who live around Lake Nacimiento, it's been pretty bad but getting better,,,, slowly.

Sailed AL today in surreal conditions watching 50+ foot flames rage up the mountain next to Hearst Castle. Respect to the helicopter folks flying water loads in those conditions. Watched them refill at the HC airport and they were having a hard time in the wind. Driving home on hwy 1 was not the usual tourist rental cars and camping rigs, but instead fire trucks, bulldozers, and supply trucks. So, smoke yes, fire yes, and lots of it!

I'd stick with that plan, this fire won't last forever, and we usually get a 'second season' during the fall, early Sept. thru early Nov.

Be sure to check with the campground to see if they are open. A little further up the road from there they just issued an evacuation warning. Hearst Castle is closed until further notice as well. Camped there a few weeks ago with my family before the local fire broke out as we love it for a before school starts staycation. Had smoke at the campground from the big sur fire on the first day with NW wind but not so bad on W or SW (remaining days).
