Looks, to me, that Crissy is losing at least half the parking area, if the "parking area" is the only availible area for cars.
Losing half the parking is a lot, considering the old lot was pretty full on weekends already.

I went to the informational meeting at the beach wed, the next informational meeting at the beach is this sat 11-12 noon

currently there is 150 paved parking spaces including grass areas 400 places to park.

After this renovation we will have the same amount 150 paved, total 400 with grass parking. So the parking total is the same.

Parking is pushed back from the beach. No more front row or second row parking.

Paved parking added in the back.

It was good in 1990, when the whole area was open to parking, some paved, some weeds, some cement foundations, some windbreaks.
They renovate to spend their allotted money, not to make improvements.

Seems like it would be a BIG improvement for us, and not much difference to anyone else, if they would do it as shown below instead...better upwind access and lawn access for rigging.

...what would be better as well is if they spent this money making these types of improvements west of the pond...put a lot in the southeast corner of the massive, barely used fields and create a mini Crissy II over there to spread people away from Crissy and use the total space more fully and evenly.

What Marty has proposed is spot on. They added all those picnic tables and bbqs a few years back which puts a lot of parking pressure on the western end of the Crissy lot. They need to maintain parking there to keep the parking more distributed. What has been proposed is completely ignorant of how folks (windsurfing or otherwise) use that place. Really disappointing as many of us took time off from work in January of 2014 for a work session with these people who basically ignored all the feedback we gave them.

That looks very good. Same parking capacity but no cars close to the beach will make the place even prettier! I am loosing my favorite spot (park right in front of the shower area and rig on the lawn just behind the car) but it is small price to pay. A westerner parking might have been nice (minus the asphalt) but it is just a matter of getting upwind in the water ... instead of driving there Shocked

Given the techno-driven-disaster that has happened at China Basin and what might become of the Stick area (a whole f#$g mall is going to be there instead of a larger Park, and developers are appealing with the city to increase the residential building height limits there) it is nice to see that the Presidio is holding on: greener!!!!! Very Happy

Some details on the reasoning for the western lot:

1. A fair amount of kiters and windsurfers park in that area marked "Lawn" and then rig sails and pump kites in the grass or dirt area behind the lot. If there is only an eastern parking lot, a lot of those people will be trying to rig sails and pump kites next to their cars in the big east lot. Picture that on a crowded weekend. There is the ability to walk back past a few rows of cars to rig/pump, but you'll have to carry everything or make two trips, lock your car, not forget anything, etc. Overall, it's a lot of people and gear moving about--and congestion. A western lot would have grass on three sides for pumping/rigging.

2. A lot of people ride bump and jump gear at Crissy, and a lot of the time it's very advantageous to launch near the pipe (west end). That's because it can be lighter wind on the inside and/or downwind. Sailing upwind isn't nearly as easy as "just sail upwind" in those conditions. *Walking* your gear upwind is an option (also note it's more strenuous in those conditions without wind lifting your gear). And in light wind for the length of Crissy field--through people on the beach or in the water--it's not insubstantial in terms of time, energy, and more congestion. Why not use the opportunity to add convenience for the large contingent of windsurfers and kiters with a distinct need and at the same time reduce congestion for all?

Parking and entering at "at the pipe" was pretty much the default location before Crissy Field got restored. That convenience was lost years ago and the new plans seem to take the rigging area an additional 50-100 yards east. Yes, it would have been nice if they kept the parking right in front of the showers and cleaned up the area west of it (where the Kites used to rig before invading the "shower area" and bother everybody). But to be frank it seems like an irrelevant inconvenience. We are there for fun, who cares about an additional 2' walk or upwind? (really ... 50-100 yards extra upwind is not such a big deal). And again: it will look nicer and given where the city is going when it comes to public access and parks we should be VERY grateful to still have Crissy!
