Anybody has experience with Severne Reflex sails?
I found a new 2013 model (Reflex 3) 8.6 or 2015 Reflex 6, 9.0 (barely used)
I can't decide which one would be better for me. Price is about the same.
I am used to sailing with older 8.6 north rtype (2 cam) but its about to retire.
I was told that there won't be much difference between my 8.6 and Severne 9.0
I am looking for opinions.
I don't like huge cam pockets because of the water weight issue, but I don't know which of these sails would have smaller pockets.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks in advance! |

2015 model would be better just because it is a later model, so more developed.
Luff sleeve is about the same size. These are race sails, not really made to be good for water starting, more for sailors that don't fall in much. If you do fall in, still need to keep it under control, falling with the sail in favorable position so that it is out of water quickly.
In case of wipe out and luff sleeve filled up with water, key is to point the sail so that tip of the mast is facing the wind and lift the sail out of water from the tip allowing it to drain out. It takes like 10-15 sec, not a huge deal.
Also, race sails are made for performance with weight being important factor and quality secondary.
The Loft seems to be exception with very good built quality. |

I probably know the seller - and they maybe won't like my post - ha ha.
But I have used the Reflex and Overdrive sails over the last 4 years.

Based on your comment any race sail would not be a good fit.
2 cam freerace sails would be better. ie Severne Turbo, or no cam Severne NCX.
Race sails / Reflex 9.0 has 4 cams 8/9 battens.
These are very stiff, fast sails.
Super stable - when the wind gusts your sail speed will explode.
Compared to a 2 cam freerace sail - the freerace will top out and twist off. (soft feeling).
The freerace will twist off and let you control the situation.
A 4 cam 9 batten race sail will increase in speed and stability as long as you are willing to go along with the ride. The reflex will feel like there is no speed ceiling.
Rigging:
Race Sails takes some specific steps / pattern. Rigging incorrectly will result in a bad performing sail.
2 cam freerace sail is much more forgiving during rigging. - room for error and/or sloppy rigging.
Waterstarting / Uphaul:
Race sails - recommend an Easy Uphaul (water in the sleeve)
Free Race Sails - much easier than a race sail - harder than a wave sail.
If you want a fast stiff top end sail - then buy the Reflex / Overdrive.
If you want a fast soft quick sail - then buy a freerace sail.
