Here's a thought: While grabbing the mast during the jibe flip is not a sin, the ability to jibe smoothly going boom to boom gives you superior results in hectic water states. Also if you're pursuing maximum speed planing through a jibe, the fewer interruptions to mast base pressure the better. (this is me regurgitating lessons from Dasher.)
None of that means it's not possible to jibe in crazy terrain or at high speed with a mast grab. But boom to boom is better suited to it.
I myself fall in the category of people who find themselves grabbing the mast once every few hundred jibes or so. It happens naturally...I don't know whether it's due to my body being out of position or a less-than optimally initiated rig flip, but intuitively I know in moment that I need to grab the mast. It's always on flat water for me. _________________ Michael

All the expert instructors who have DVD's, websites, instructional courses etc..and have taught thousands of people each say do not grab the mast during a jibe. These guys have every movement and every possible error that results in failure dissected, I'll go with their conclusions. |

Many style work just fine.
Robbie Naish and Nevin Sayre were are total polar opposites.
Robbie old school step and mast grab, Nevin strap to strap and boom to boom.
Both did well in racing. |

I grab the mast if I have done something wrong in my turn as a recovery move. Lots of things can go wrong. If I have good timing and speed my and I don't allow the sail to get behind me, I go boom to boom. When I'm ready to flip, I push the clue end of the boom away and release my back hand. With my front hand I pull the sail hard across the board. At this point I just let it all go and the sail rotates quickly and effortlessly |

Fancy that. Throw, Throw, Grab, and Go. Maybe somebody should write that technique up. |
