Jim's post explains the physics behind the problem. It is strictly an issue of high torque pivoting around two long levers- the entire body above the foot is one lever and the 5 feet of board is the other. If the foot is fixed in place, the weakest link in the chain breaks. Period. Ski boots and bindings have not changed much either, but ACL tears occur for the same reason. You can't fix the problem aside from what Jim is doing. Unless someone wants to invent a progressively-stretching strap material. Yes I sail, but I am speaking as a PT with 20+ years of clinical experience. |

Even that has "issues", as the sailor's front foot will jam a bit further and more tightly into its bear trap with each jump in a reach. I finally put a small strip of 1/4" inch high pad material just in front of my forward strap, right in the groove where I can grip it with my toes. If it crept aft on my foot, I knew my foot was going in too far. |
