You have to admit Dan, old fin designs for old Mistrals Competitions were actually quite short in depth in contrast with today's view of things. But, you're right if you're interested in using longer fins to coincide with bigger sails. Yet, using relatively small A Box fins, the risk isn't too bad if the condition of the board is generally pretty good.

Old Comp fins were not merely short but very low lift and high drag. Swapping in a modern fin at max, 1 foot off length puts far more tourqe on the box. Beware, speaking from experience blowing boxes from several early Mistrals, including some SST versions using aluminum boxes. It's not just the box but lack of support to the box. I suggest checking integrity of both box and board cavity into which the box installs.

My old Sailboard lost it's box and fin in a very clean manner: it unglued from the cavity and sank. Not much glue was holding it in place.

Luckily, since it is a multifin board, I could remove a side box and reinstall it in the center. Didn't bother to fill the cavity. It's quite smooth and tight.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I just was able to get out to my board. It is a standard US box. 1 inch deep. Looking at the posts saying that the box is unable to sustain much pressure, should I go for a sub 30cm free ride fin.
