Ohio House expels Rep. Larry Householder over massive bribery scheme

State of play: Householder, the former speaker of Ohio's House, was arrested last year in a bribery case intended to "approve legislation to prop up two nuclear power plants and then kill a ballot issue trying to overturn the law," AP reports.
Wednesday's vote approved a resolution stating that Householder was "not suited" for office following his indictment, and abides by a constitutional rule that allows expulsion for "disorderly conduct," according to the AP.
What they're saying: Householder maintained his innocence in a speech on the House floor prior to the vote.
“I have not nor have I ever taken a bribe or solicited or been solicited for taking a bribe,” Householder told the GOP-controlled chamber.
“If racketeering, bribery and money laundering do not constitute disorderly conduct, then frankly nothing ever could," said Rep. Brian Stewart (R). |

The group also contributed to the legal and ethical travails that forced his resignation.
What's new: In late May, two days after Greitens officially entered the Senate race, SEALs for Truth filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission signaling it was kicking back into gear.
The super PAC had been largely inactive since Greitens' election in 2016. It tried four times last year to terminate its FEC registration but the commission rejected each effort.
A source familiar with the situation told Axios the termination was denied because of an ongoing FEC review of allegations it illegally hid the sources of $2 million in contributions to Greitens' gubernatorial campaign.
Background The $2 million that SEALs for Truth donated to Greitens' 2016 campaign came entirely from a nonprofit that, in turn, had links to Greitens' staffers and consultants.
The donation was the largest political contribution in Missouri history, and ethics groups have since alleged it was designed to hide the sources of funds for Greitens' campaign.
It followed discussions among the Greitens team — later unearthed by the Missouri Ethics Commission — about using nonprofit "dark money" groups to keep the identities of large campaign donors secret.
Missouri officials determined that Greitens' campaign had illegally used nonprofits to boost his gubernatorial campaign. Greitens himself was cleared of wrongdoing.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a left-leaning nonprofit, filed a complaint with the FEC alleging the SEALs for Truth scheme violated federal election laws. It later sued the FEC to compel an investigation. The case is ongoing. |

Former President Donald Trump staffer Anthony Scaramucci took the stand Thursday in a federal case against a former Chicago Bank executive whom Scaramucci says he helped get an interview for a potential spot in the administration.

Stephen Calk, the former chairman and CEO of The Federal Savings Bank, is on trial in Manhattan for allegedly pushing through $16 million in risky bank loans for Paul Manafort, Trump's onetime campaign chairman, in 2016 and 2017 while conspiring with Manafort to get a high-ranking spot in the Trump administration.
Scaramucci testified that Manafort asked him to get Calk an interview for the position of secretary of the Army during the transition after Trump was elected president in 2016.
At the time, Scaramucci was on the self-proclaimed "tiger team" with Jared Kushner and other inner-circle Trump advisers, which was overseeing interviews for under secretary and deputy secretary positions across the administration.
"The Mooch" said Thursday that he didn't know Calk but it was not uncommon for people to contact him with recommendations for personnel picks.
Though Manafort had taken formal leave from Trump's staff, Scaramucci said they had a good relationship and he "wanted to be helpful" to Manafort when he reached out pushing Calk and another friend for administration positions.
Scaramucci testified that Manafort called Calk "a friend of his" who "worked on the campaign and had been an early supporter of the president-elect" but never mentioned the bank loans he got from Calk.
Had he known that dynamic, Scaramucci testified, he would not have helped Calk get an interview.
The defense counsel argued Wednesday during opening statements that Calk didn't know he was doing anything wrong in giving Manafort $16 million in loans, saying it was Manafort who had committed fraud by lying about his wealth to get the loans approved.
"This is not a sweetheart deal," said Calk's attorney Paul Schoeman.
Schoeman acknowledged that Calk "absolutely" had sought advice and help from Manafort to get a government position because he "really loves the military" as a former member of the Army Reserve and wanted to serve the country.
But the only role Calk got was an unpaid position during Trump's campaign on his Economic Advisory Council, Schoeman said.
Scaramucci, who also worked on the Trump campaign, said that advisory role was a glorified fundraising gig to get big-ticket donors to encourage their wealthy friends to donate to Trump's cause.
Scaramucci said he had corresponded with Calk about several potential roles he might be interested in because Florida Panthers owner Vincent Viola was already slotted for secretary of the Army at the time.
Jurors were shown text messages from Manafort and Calk following up with Scaramucci several times about the interview process between November 2016 and January 2017.
Calk was eventually given an interview at Trump Tower for under secretary of the Army but was never offered nor did he accept a position within the Trump administration.
Scaramucci is set to continue testifying in Manhattan federal court Tuesday morning, when the trial continues.
He declined to comment as he left the courthouse Thursday. "That's unusual for me, right? Nothing to say," Scaramucci told reporters.
Anna Ivakhnik, a former Federal Savings Bank employee, testified earlier in the day on her concerns at the time about Manafort's loan application and financial position before she left the company in September 2016.
Kory Langhofer, lead attorney for the Trump transition team, testified briefly Thursday about preserved emails from the team that were submitted as evidence in the case.
The alleged "quid pro quo" between Calk and Manafort came up in 2018 at Manafort's trial in Virginia.
Manafort was found guilty on eight counts of financial fraud, but jurors deadlocked on the four counts of bank fraud and conspiracy related to the fraudulent loans he had received from Calk's bank. Months later, Manafort pleaded guilty in a separate federal case in Washington, DC, and admitted to all the conduct alleged in the Virginia trial, including conspiring with Calk to commit bank fraud.
Trump pardoned Manafort and the March indictment in Calk's case did not charge Manafort as part of the alleged conspiracy.

The duo were bankrolled by the longtime conservative donor and heiress to the Gore-Tex fortune, Susan Gore, and trained their operatives on a remote Wyoming ranch in areas like the "basics of espionage" and "political sabotage," according to the newspaper.
It remains unclear what level of success they were able to accomplish, though the Times notes Seddon and Prince placed two spies — Beau Maier, the nephew of conservative commentator Glenn Beck, and Sofia LaRocca, deep into Democratic political organizations in Wyoming, Arizona, and Colorado.
But then, at some point, Democratic operatives became suspicious of the story LaRocca was claiming, according to The Times:
Her behavior raised some suspicion. Ms. LaRocca and Mr. Maier lived in Fort Collins, Colo., only about 45 miles from Cheyenne, Wyoming's capital, but their residence prompted some Democrats to ask how they planned to organize a grass-roots campaign to flip the state while living in Colorado. Ms. LaRocca told others she could not rent a home in Cheyenne because she had a dog, an implausible explanation.
Ms. LaRocca had also introduced herself to party officials as Cat Debreau. She eventually told a story about why she later went by the name Sofia LaRocca: She had been the victim of an online stalker, she said, but decided to once again use her original name because the police had told her that her stalker had reformed.
"Her story from the start rang very untrue," said Nina Hebert, who at the time was the digital director for the Wyoming Democratic Party. "The police don't call you and say, 'Hey, your stalker is better.'"
Neither Project Veritas nor its longtime head and frequent Fox News guest James O'Keefe returned a request for comment Friday.
One of the most prominent targets of the operation was Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon, a Republican who many in Trump's corner viewed as overly moderate and whose candidacy Gore had vigorously opposed.
Maier and LaRocca were also able to install themselves within the Wyoming-based progressive organization, Better Wyoming, which only discovered the plot months later, after they had been well integrated into Better Wyoming operations. Nate Martin, the group's head, told the Times he suspected the idea was to "dig up this information and you sit on it until you really can destroy somebody."
Maier and LaRocca were married last week in Wyoming, according to the report. Glenn Beck delivered a toast at the reception. |

He also arranged a phone call between Trump and a top UAE official in 2017, according to a court filing. |

The question needs to be answered what did he do with the 1.5 billion, obviously it was dark money to influence the election. and did they put in more effort like the russians did from their homeland. The russians spent in equivalent similar in manpower.
Again what did trump get with this 1.5 billion dollars. It certainly was not just spent to modify several speeches as they noted.
Again this information was in the Mueller report and Barr did not act on it. 1.5 billion reasons to.
