The season is still very young in March and the Pacific is still in winter mode. Are you there now? |

Nope, not dead, there will be wind on Maui (probably quite a bit this Summer),
it is still a windsurfing vacation destination.

Depends on who you talk to and what your experience has given you in information.
Guys who've been to Maui multiple times might start to wonder what's on the other side of the fence, Canary's, Chile, or West Africa.
Me, been only twice, so it still has the appeal, plus lots of great sailors living there between contests. Oahu got old hat after 15 odd trips, knowing it's potentials and limitations pretty much.
Spring, summer, and fall Baja still has it's excitement, plenty of spots not on the radar, and some exploration to be had. Plus, it's somewhat close to California. |

On my last trip in November of 2013 - 5 sailable days out of 3 weeks, not good. Last year I didn't go because I didn't see much good days in October and November. I was thinking to come this spring, keep looking weather on Maui ... not much wind. Called my buddy who lives on Maui. He said: he sailed last time in October. Overall last year he said he sailed 3 times. He even started kiting out of desperation.
I'm not interested in going to Maui on summer
1. because we have warm weather and wind on east coast
2. not really care for flat (and bumpy) water sailing _________________ Andrew

Well, that's it's windy season ... #1 is why many of us don't go there just for the WSing, and #2 is why many folks who winter in Maui go elsewhere all or part of the summer. |

Can't imagine why anyone would go to Maui in the winter, except for warm weather, surfing half the days, wind 2 days a week with 6.5's, and SUP/diving.
Wind is good in spring, period.
You don't go to the Gorge in Nov. You don't go to the Bay Area in Nov. You don't go wave sailing in Baja in Nov..
Every spot has it's season.
And even Oahu can blow more often in winter than Maui, although mostly 6.0.
Local knowledge is needed, of course, but you can't go to Hatteras in August and expect solid 5.0 winds most days. |

zirtaeb,
I spent a lot of time on Maui, mostly October - November and sailed daily. I been there in February and sailed 75% of days. Doesn't look like it works like that now. Somebody explained on this forum: trades change direction a bit. And that small change killed wind for North Shore. _________________ Andrew

Sounds to me like your loss.
1. Almost everyplace does in summer, even Maui.
2. Been there lots in the summer, I was always able to find waves with 3 to 4' faces somewhere, and you don't have to go to Hookipa to find them.
Sounds like you could use another friend in Maui with a different point of view. My reports from friends there have been pretty consistent for late spring thru the summer months, that's when you have to go if you want to sail everyday. |

You were lucky those times, simple as that.
My parents had a condo there for years, I was there during all times of the year during those fun years. |
