There's always the first really inspiring video of very early season and this has to be it for this year. Thanks. Love the first drone video I've seen; what kind of drone does it take to handle the wind, I've been wondering? How much would a workable one cost?

Fabulous video Kevin! Thanks. Are you suing a GoPro
and if so what settings are you using: wide, Medium or narrow?

And what software are you using to edit the GoPro footage..?

Can't wait to get started this year.

My friend, James, made the video. He always goes out w/ at least a GoPro or two, so he has tons of footage. He bought himself the drone for xmas, and he's been flying it seemingly every day since. It takes a lot of practice, but he seems to have the hang of it. The first day he flew it over the water was a big offshore surf day at OB... we thought we lost it at one point... the sucker was way out there when the connection broke and the app crashed. Luckily there phone home function started to kick in, but it was blowing pretty hard offshore. I think he has the DJI Phantom 2 Vision +. It's about $1k... probably double that by the time you add accessories and what not. It has a built in camera and gimbal. The drone footage from Bodega was in ~20mph winds or so... the sailor is on a 5.0 and 101l freestyle board... probably about 190lbs, so that gives you an idea of what kind of wind it can handle. The drone has a dedicated remote, but there is also a smartphone app for the camera, so you use both at the same time to fly and frame your shots.

I don't know what settings James is using for the GoPro or which models he has. I believe he's using Final Cut Pro to edit.

Here is the full video we did from Bodega last week.
http://youtu.be/Wk2jnQih5m4

Winds were 23+mph, gusting 26-28. The maker of the drone said max 22 mph so we went a bit above and beyond on that one Laughing
I was overpowered on 5.0 and went down to 4.2 right after.

We shot only at 1080p @ 30fps from 50ft high which shows on scenes facing the sun (pixels).
Once these drone get to 60fps, things will get really interesting. You can do that already if the camera is a Gopro but we had the original camera + gimbal on the drone that day.

Flawless test, we just need a beacon on the sailor for the camera to follow in the future. The pilot can then just focus on flying.

Things are about to get very interesting. Just being able to use that technology to teach new sailors or check spots from a distance is a cool add-on.

I give James a hard time about how much video he cuts while windsurfing but I think this one is the best one he has done thus far. Looks like the stirrings of the windsurfing season has begun.

BTW, Kevin, those are two pretty bombin' forwards you did: one right at the start and the one at 2:55 that you managed to over-rotate off a piece of chop that aspired to be 2' tall!

In the future, all threads on "how to do a forward" should just link to this video and say: "be like Kevin".

Thx rig. Two of the best forward loopers I've seen are Josh Stone and Sean Aiken. They have quite different styles/techniques. In flatwater (like the bay and gorge), Josh does the downwind takeoff style... he sails really powerfully and planes through close to 100% of his loops. Sean Aiken has the really smooth pivot on takeoff style with the perfect easy landing. Of course in the waves, Josh has the crazy stalled one-handers where he starts and finishes the loop hooked in and with only one hand on the boom... and he still planes out of them.

Hey Kevin:

Any chance of putting on a looping clinic?
