A few months ago there was a post talking about the lack of wind on Maui. The poster said that they only got a maximum of one day of wind in a row never more than that. HAs the wind situation on Maui gotten better? Has the wind been blowing? Will there be a fall wave sailing season with wind? |

No one knows but the wind has been blowing. The Aloha is going on at the end of Oct. It always has wind, along with the AWT for many years. |

So has the wind on Maui returned to a more or less normal windy pattern? |

Just got back from a 2 week trip. Sailed every day except one. 5.4 every time except one day on a 4.6 for a couple hours. 77 ltr JP freestyle wave. Sailed Kanaha daily except 3 times at Ohukai in Kihei. Very nice head high+ bump at lowers since Tuesday. The wind began to drop on Thursday. Yesterday at Kanaha was dead to everyone except the slalom guys on real big boards and sails. I went to Kihei and sailed 5.4 for 2 hours. The weather forecaster, Guy Hagi, says variable light winds with hot muggy conditions for the next week. There seems to be a storm to the northeast of Maui that will shut down the trade winds. There is large surf due to hit Maui today. It was major waves on Oahu yesterday. When I left last night everyone was anticipating the first real waves of the season. Bummer I had to leave. |

I've been here for a month and it has been the lightest I have seen in 20 years. Twenty years ago Maui got over 300 trade wind days a year, now it gets under 200 (maybe way under). Cimate changed is real and the trade wind pattern is being affected. To sail the light trades today I will need a 100 liter board and a six meter. I'll probably go surfing cause the waves are good on both shores.

This year on Maui has been on golden pond - all year long!
No winter at all --- rain, ran, rain - a few crappy on-shore days with rain
spring - nada - glassy, slogging on big board/sail mostly
summer - half of July was o.k - the rest glassy/hot/humid
windsurf shops on Maui - report worst in history
Hurricane activity in Pacific off the charts - off year or global warming 4 ever?
good news - tiger sharks back to eating sea food
good news - snorkeling best in history - glassy/calm
good news - Hookipa summer fun - big surf and kinda enough wind on 9-11
Aloha - Ya'll |
